The economy uses natural gas for a wide variety of purposes, including burning it for heat. Natural gas is used for heating because it’s relatively easy to transport, has high energy content (density), and is currently plentiful. The downside to the combustion of natural gas is the generation of GHG emissions.
More and more technologies are coming to market that reduce or eliminate the use of natural gas for heating. Where these natural gas alternatives are not yet less expensive than burning natural gas, a carbon offset helps get them installed. The more a technology gets deployed, the more efficient and less expensive it can become.
